I think this review misses the entire point of the movie. This movie is about Dee Roberts fight against a corrupt system, which included the DA, the police, and the judicial system. This corrupt system included annual drug raids of low income housing projects, witness intimidation and racial profiling. Unfortunately, just as Dee was starting to build a better life for herself and her children, she was unjustly swept up in the annual racial vendetta of DA Calvin Beckett. This is the story of her fight (with the help of the ACLU), this movie is not about Gladys. The brief appearances of Gladys in the movie are to remind the viewer why Dee's fight is so important, and what it means to future generations.

Gladys appearance is critical because the hammed up performance and dramatic lighting are terribly overdone to pull you out of the film. Dee has enough reason to fight without additional reasons. That's melodrama.

All of the controversy is better left for discussion elsewhere, like a political blog. This is about the film, not the issues contained within. I could have mentioned the constant cutbacks to George Bush on the TV screens and how it is apparently supposed to link him to all of this, but then we get deal with a whole new set of commenters. The film tells the story well, despite changing the names of all involved.
